Corporate report: A ‘Britney Spears’-Femme Fatale Review

Britney Spears will be in Vegas Friday to record a video for her new disc, Femme Fatale. Listening to the tracks, I am struck by the fact that Femme Fatale is quality product. In another period the term corporate rock was used to disparage user-friendly groups like Journey, Kansas and Foreigner. But those bands seemed willful actors in their creations. Britney Spears is the pure form of corporate music; she is merely the face of ‘Britney Spears’ product, not the CEO.  Take the title: A Femme Fatale is an irresistible woman who lures men to destruction.  Whereas the person Britney Spears as an adult is known for destroying herself in relationships with guys who seem resistible. There is no irony intended. Relieved of any pretense of being an autonomous artist, the product no longer has to answer for Britney Spears. The executives who manufacture ‘Britney Spears’ are marketing a Femme Fatale image for the 2011 disc, videos, and tour. We listen to Eminem to get the front-line report on his mind. ‘Britney Spears’ is a corporate bet on what people will enjoy. On Femme Fatale ‘Britney Spears’ thinks a slutty dance groove is selling this year. The result is pleasurable dance singles that were created by top talent. Enjoy.

Vegas grovels for Celine Dion

Her show does not open until next month but yesterday Celine Dion showed up and Vegas groveled at her feet. When she first came here in 2003, people wondered about her ability to sell tickets at prices that sailed as high as her irritating voice. Now she is a rare sure thing for Vegas: a town where hubris has been replaced by a scary lack of imagination and confidence. Anyway, Dion will have a show, and many high notes are assured with a Michael Jackson tribute. The woman who Elton John used to fondly call the “the skinny bitch” is back. This time around everyone knows her shows will sell out with tickets topping out at $250 plus fees. And, of course, casino hosts all over the city will also be thrilled to get her high rolling husband back. (photo by Sarah Gerke)

Tahir Square labels MGM Resort’s ‘New Giza’ as Mubarak asset

MGM Resorts told the Review-Journal that nothing going on in Egypt would impact the company’s plans in that country for New Giza, a resort for the affluent which will be sitting on a lovely bit of land purchased with MGM Resort’s partner Mahmoud el-Gammal.  Mahmoud el-Gammal is the father in law of former President Mubarak’s son, Gammal Mubarak.

Now, the land for New Giza has turned up on a spread sheet of potential illicit Mubarak assets that is being created and distributed by some of the protesters from Tahir Square including the well known Egyptian blogger Sandmonkey. The spreadsheet includes New Giza and asks how “Mahmoud ElGammal ..suddenly bought the land for building the compound of New Giza.” I wonder if MGM Resorts knows the answer? This should be interesting.

Another MGM Resorts partner Dubai World isn’t really a company in the traditional sense. It is an outgrowth of the ruling family of Dubai who chose to take the emirate’s wealth (rather than let the people decide how to use it) and speculated on a high risk casino project in Vegas: CityCenter. Today’s New York Times has a good reminder of how business works for a company in Dubai via a look at Emirates Air whose head:

“Sheik Ahmed plays a role in almost every aspect of air travel into and out of Dubai. Indeed, he is known as ‘Mr. Aviation.’ He is the chairman of FlyDubai, the city-state’s budget airline, and of Dnata, the airport’s ground handling company. He is also the president of the Dubai Civil Aviation Authority, which oversees the industry. And he happens to be the uncle of Dubai’s current ruler, Sheik Mohammed bin Rashid al-Maktoum.”

The corruption is just sitting there on the surface, but it is ‘legal’ when a family rules a nation. The ruling family’s Dubai World in addition to CityCenter has also made investments in Vegas nightlife company Light Group and Cirque.

It is sad that Las Vegas put so much effort into ending the ability of criminals (and, mob families) to earn and/or launder illicit gains here, and now we have become the business partner of choice for corrupt authoritarian rulers from the Gulf to North Africa to China.

Bad magic: Criss Angel tries to make me disappear!

I am working on a story about Criss Angel or trying to. For some reason he has been putting great effort into not allowing me to report on him. His efforts have become a sort of farce to themselves. See for yourself: The forty-something Angel has blocked me on Twitter:

Will MGM Resorts International regret tie to Mubarak?

It is a risky thing to make deals with governments that exist without the consent of the governed and remain largely unaccountable and, in the absence of a free press, furtive. Needless to say the casino business has not seen things that way. When an elite loots a nation they have lots of money to shop, eat and gamble.

Take the largest company in Vegas, MGM Resorts International formerly MGM-Mirage: they seem magnetically attracted to working with authoritarian regimes. Yet, it is interesting to see that there is a cost to these relationships that the resort world does not seem to have fully considered.

For example, authoritarian regimes live in a world of corruption. As a result, to enter Macau’s lucrative market, MGM Resorts International cut a deal with a business partner judged too sleazy for New Jersey authorities to allow the company to continue operating in the Garden State. Imagine what it takes to be too shady to do business in New Jersey? That situation, by the way, has turned infinitely more complicated of late.

Meanwhile, last year the Wall Street Journal ran a story on MGM Resorts International’s expansion plans that do not include a single democracy: “So far, the signed agreements include a Bellagio …in the Egyptian Red Sea resort of Sharm El Sheikh and in Dubai…There are also deals for MGM Grand properties in Cairo, Vietnam and Tianjin, China.”

So, by the way, who do you think MGM Resorts International picked for a business partner for their resort projects in Egypt? If you guessed the father-in-law of the detested President Mubarak’s son (who was being groomed to be the next president for life until last week), Gamal Mubarak, who millions of Egyptians are currently in the street protesting, well, you guessed right. I wonder if that arrangement will endear MGM Resorts International to whatever comes next in Egypt?

And, that in fact is the problem with cutting deals with governments that lack the legitimacy of being accountable to the governed. There is a reason Chinese authorities are blocking search results for “Egypt.”

Maybe it is time for Vegas resort companies to reconsider investing and intertwining with the well connected of autocratic regimes worldwide? These are governments, after all, that may look solid one day (as long as they keep ruthlessly in control), but can vanish the next.  And, it is then that the true cost (and probably some interesting monetary details) of these partnerships will be known.

Gilbert Gottfried: What to think?

I have  been slow to review Gilbert Gottfried who is appearing at Las Vegas Hilton as the debut act in their Icon’s of Comedy showcase. The reason is that his act left me befuddled, and I am not sure what to make of him. Of course, this is a unhelpful view to bring to readers and I am sorry. The room was full and his audience was clearly enjoying themselves. So, if you are a fan already, Gottfried is clearly hitting the mark his audience expects. And, yet, I often felt I was not in on the joke. Why is doing an imitation of of Andrew “Dice” Clay funny in 2011? Or, for that matter, Bela Lugosi?

Still, there was quite a bit I loved about Gottfried. The opening of his act which was a sort of meta joke about comedy was as smart as it was funny. And, I found his odd stage presence, more like a lead singer burying himself into the microphone stand than a stand-up performer, engaging. He is clearly different than most comics who perform in Vegas, and I want to stand behind anything that feels outside the box. Yet, in truth, I was more often confused than amused.

Can you explain Gottfried’s humor to me?

Porn star Bree Olson before ‘Charlie Sheen’

This is a great video of the boring reality of red carpet coverage. Anyway, porn star Bree Olson is now in the news after being linked by TMZ to Charlie Sheen. The site says they were spending time together at the Palms. Here is Olson arriving at The Palms on Saturday night for the AVN Awards. As you can see, no one seems too interested in asking her questions on Saturday. I am sure that is different today.

From Las Vegas 2011 AEE Mark Spiegler: “Patron of the Tarts”

Please read my story on The Daily Beast from the Adult Entertainment Expo at Venetian this weekend.  I shadowed one of the adult industry’s top talent agents along with clients like Asa Akira and Kristina Rose  for a night. Here are some pictures that Lanie Crossman took of dinner. You can read all about the dinner in the Beast story:

Porn’s favorite Vegas bar

Want to hit on a porn star?

For the next few days the adult film industry will be gathered at the Venetian for the Adult Entertainment Expo. Friday and Saturday allow fans to buy admission to see the stars and get autographs on the convention floor. And, then, of course, Saturday night is the self-proclaimed porn Oscars, The AVN Awards at the Palms.

But if you really want to rub shoulders with porn stars and industry insiders you can ignore the official convention, and the porn star hosted nightclub parties. Instead head over to the Venetian’s “circle bar.”  This is a generic bar on the casino floor. But for over a decade, for reasons no one seems to recall,  this innocuous casino bar area has become the unofficial heart of the AEE convention. From company owners to the hottest adult stars, anyone looking to mingle, strike deals, network and flirt will at some point go to the Venetian’s circle bar over the next few days.
